Guy Fawkes: The York Connection

The story of Bonfire Night begins just 45 minutes from Kiplin Lodge Park, in the historic city of York. Guy Fawkes was born in Stonegate in 1570 and baptised at St Michael le Belfry church, right next to York Minster.

The School Connection

At St Peter's School in York, young Guy Fawkes studied alongside John and Christopher Wright, who would later become his fellow conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot.

The Guy Fawkes Inn, York

Today, visitors can raise a pint at the Guy Fawkes Inn on High Petergate, just yards from where he attended school.

The pub celebrates its notorious namesake with historical displays and traditional Yorkshire hospitality.

From Yorkshire Lad to Revolutionary

After his father's death, Guy's mother remarried a Catholic, and the family moved to Scotton near Knaresborough, just 25 miles from Kiplin Lodge Park. This conversion to Catholicism would shape his destiny. At 21, he sold his Yorkshire inheritance and joined the Spanish army, becoming an explosives expert before returning to plot against King James I.

Understanding Firework Brands: What Makes the Magic

Yorkshire's spectacular displays feature fireworks from Britain's leading manufacturers:

"Lighting up the sky since 1891," Black Cat represents British firework heritage.  Their range includes:

  • Standard Fireworks - Family-friendly options since 1891
  • Black Cat Premium - High-powered display-quality fireworks
  • Selection boxes - Perfect for garden celebrations

Hallmark Fireworks

Featured in many Yorkshire displays, Hallmark creates spectacular compound cakes like the "London Underground Barrage Pack" with 239 shots and the "Relentless 228 Shot" powerhouse.
